Overnight Oats

Overnight oats are a great make ahead breakfast. They are so easy to throw in a container and throw in the fridge then eat the next morning. They are also great because they allow for so much variety so you never get bored. Follow along as I share the formula for overnight oats. I would love to hear your favorite combinations!

Formula

Overnight oats = 1 part oats + 2 parts milk + extras(mix ins + toppings)

I find that 1/2 cup of oats with 1 cup of milk makes a good serving size. If you add a lot of mix ins you will need to increase the amount of milk. How much milk you use depends on the texture you are looking for. If you want a thicker texture, add less milk.

Directions

Mix the oats and mix ins together. Add the milk. Stir until well combined. Place in the fridge overnight(or at least 6 hours). I like to make one serving at a time, but some people will make multiple servings in separate containers at one time.

You can eat the oats cold or warm depending on your preference. Right before you eat the oats, add your desired toppings.

Oats

Old fashioned oats work best for overnight oats. The hold up the best to soaking in liquid overnight. Anything else will become too soggy and won’t be very thick by the time you eat it. If you use a different oat, let the oats sit for a lesser amount of time. If you use 1/2 cup of oats you will get a cup of overnight oats. You can either make individual servings or make a big batch at once. I typically don’t like how soft the oats become if they sit for too long so I make 1 serving at a time.

Milk

Lately, my favorite milk has been an almond milk coconut milk blend. You can use your favorite type of milk or milk substitute. Whether it’s skim milk, chocolate milk, almond milk, oat milk, or goat milk, it will work. It is important to take into account the add ins when you decide how much milk to eat. Typically it’s best to mix together the oats and add ins first then add the milk. Use whatever amount will get the perfect texture for you. Remember, this is just a guide to help you create the perfect overnight oats recipe for yourself.

Mix Ins

Mix ins are what you add to the oats and let sit overnight. Mix ins can add both texture and flavor. Nuts add a lot of good texture. Try fresh fruit or dried fruit for different textures. Yogurt makes the oats creamier and adds a tangy flavor. Spices add a little more depth. Chia seeds are great mix ins because the make the mixture a little thicker.

Topping

Toppings are probably my favorite part of overnight oats. Overnight oats are soft, so the toppings are a great way to add a variation in texture. Nuts are always a great way to add texture. Both fresh fruit and dried fruit offer different textures. Yogurt can add an extra layer of creaminess when added right before eating. Granola is a great way to add crunch.

I would love to hear about your favorite combinations! Stay tuned next week for the recipe I have come up with based on my guide!
